Woman severely injured in pit bull attack

A man had to shoot the family pit bull Friday after it began attacking a 55-year-old woman in their east valley home.

Las Vegas police credit the man for saving the woman's life. The dog died after being shot four times.

The pit bull began attacking the woman about 5:45 p.m. in a home on the 2400 block of Grannis Lane, near Sahara Avenue and U.S. Highway 95, police said. The woman suffered serious injuries to her arm, hand, lower leg and foot. Some of her fingers were missing and she had bite wounds to the bone by the time police arrived at the home moments after the call, police said.

A 23-year-old woman in the home also was bitten after she tried to pry the dog off the woman. The man in the house was also bitten but retrieved a gun and shot the dog. The woman was taken to a hospital.
