Work begins on paved access road to Sloan Canyon

More than 13 years after it was created, Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area is about to get its first paved access road and other amenities.

The Bureau of Land Management announced Friday that construction has begun on the road from Democracy Drive at the southern edge of Henderson. The project also includes a temporary visitor contact station with a restroom, information kiosk and increased parking.

During the work, which is slated for completion in mid-May, access to Petroglyph Canyon from the north will be rerouted and only construction vehicles will be allowed to use the existing dirt road.

To protect the public and natural resources in the area, the construction site is closed and marked by orange tortoise fence.

Visitors can still hike in from the north to access the trail into the canyon. Parking is available at Adventura Park on Via Firenze.

Access to Petroglyph Canyon from the south through Hidden Valley will remain open without restrictions during construction.

The 48,438-acre conservation area was created in 2002 to protect a host of natural and cultural sites, including large concentrations of American Indian rock art.
