9 seeking to fill Nevada Supreme Court vacancy

CARSON CITY — Four district judges and five attorneys filed applications to fill the vacancy on the Nevada Supreme Court created by the August retirement of Justice Nancy Saitta.

The deadline was 5 p.m. Friday.

Applicants include:

— Michael Edward Buckley, 66, director and shareholder at Fennemore Craig law firm in Las Vegas.

— Elissa F. Cadish, 52, Clark County district judge.

— Harriet E. Cummings, 56, Carson City attorney.

— Chris William Davis, 56, Las Vegas attorney.

— Mark Ralph Denton, 65, Clark County district judge.

— Susan Holland Johnson, 57, Clark County district judge.

— Michael King Powell, 68, Gardnerville attorney, former assistant federal public defender.

— Lidia S. Stiglich, 46, Washoe County district judge.

— Paul Gordon Taggart, 50, Carson City attorney.

Applicants must have 15 years of legal experience, including two years in Nevada.

The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection will conduct background investigations on all the applicants before holding interviews Oct. 17-18, and on Oct. 19 if necessary.

The commission will then submit three nominees to Gov. Brian Sandoval, who will make the final appointment. The new justice on the seven-member court will serve until January 2019 and must stand for election in 2018.
