Northern Nevada inmate serving robbery sentence dies

A Northern Nevada Correctional Center inmate serving up to 23 years for robbery and use of a deadly weapon has died, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.

Robert Vanwagenen, 55, died Tuesday at the Stewart Conservation Camp in Carson City, the department wrote in a release Wednesday evening. The conservation camp houses minimum custody and community trustee inmates, most of whom work for the Nevada Division of Forestry, in five dormitory-type units.

Medical staff from the correctional center and the Carson City fire department responded to the camp, but lifesaving attempts were unsuccessful, the release said.

Vanwagenen had been in prison since May 2001 and was serving consecutive sentences of three to 13 years for robbery and three to 10 years for use of a deadly weapon enhancement, the release said.

Vanwagenen's cause and manner of death will be released by the Carson City coroner's office.
