FIELDER’S CHOICES: Still remembering the small schools

Small-school football fans (yes, both of you), I didn’t forget about you.
This time.
It’s state semifinal time in Classes 1A, 2A and 3A and time for me to show off what little I know about these teams.
I still haven’t made my pick for state champion in Class 2A. I figure I’ll do that around Nov. 21.
But my picks to win state in Class 1A (Pahranagat Valley) and Class 3A (Truckee) are still rolling along.
Let’s try to go 5-for-5 this week. I won’t pick Truckee’s game because there aren’t any Southern Nevada teams in it. But the other games are here.
Read on.
Lowry (8-3) at Moapa Valley (6-4)
Moapa Valley likes having me pick the opposing team to win.
The last two weeks I picked Virgin Valley to beat Moapa, and sure enough, the Pirates won both games.
The rugged Class 3A Southern League season is behind the Pirates as they prepare to face the Buckaroos, who apparently wear 10-gallon hats instead of helmets.
Lowry is led by running back Jace Billingsley, who has rustled up 2,286 yards and 27 touchdowns, Buckaroo.
The winner of this one most likely gets Truckee next week.
And, well, Buckaroo, I’m picking ... Moapa Valley by 6.
Pershing County (6-4) at Agassi Prep (7-2)
At least Agassi Prep doesn’t have to change the team name on the scouting report.
For the third straight week, and the fourth time in five weeks, the Stars face a team called the Mustangs. Note to Shadow Ridge: you might be next.
Agassi Prep hasn’t been held to fewer than 30 points since the season opener.
Pershing County was torched by Rite of Passage and gave up 36 points to Dayton. Other than that, the defense has been good. It’ll need to be again.
DeVonn Porter and Tank Carter have the edge here. Agassi Prep by 4.
Mountain View (6-5) at Rite of Passage (9-2)
The fourth-seeded Saints pulled off an upset last week (one I saw coming, by the way).
This one will be much tougher, though.
The Rams traditionally start slow, but once they get their roster of kids from several different states together, they’re tough to beat.
Devontay Williams and Deandre Hampton have combined for 46 touchdowns this year for the Rams — and they’ll add to that total. Rite of Passage by 12.
Indian Springs (7-2) at Coleville (10-0)
Indian Springs has had a great season, and Adam Reinke is a tremendous athlete.
But this is Coleville. And Coleville is fantastic; that’s “score every other play” fantastic.
Buh Hamilton (Buh? Yes, Buh, Buckaroo) and Emmi Sandoval have combined for 68 touchdowns for Coleville.
Indian Springs will be playing in chase mode. Coleville by 30.
Carlin (9-2) at Pahranagat Valley (10-0)
Carlin has gained 3,572 yards rushing this year.
That’s the only thing that’ll stop Pahranagat from scoring 100.
We’re headed for another Pahranagat-Coleville point-fest in the championship.
Cody Hosier and the boys roll. Pahranagat Valley by 26.
