Clark County School District cited in Title IX complaint

The National Women’s Law Center filed a complaint against the Clark County School District on Wednesday alleging that the district failed to offer equal opportunities to female athletes.

The center filed complaints against 12 districts nationwide alleging that they violated Title IX, a federal law prohibiting discrimination in federally funded education programs.

The other school districts are Chicago; Columbus, Ohio; Deer Valley, Ariz.; Henry County, Ga.; Houston; Irvine, Calif.; New York City; Oldham County, Ky.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Wake County, N.C.; and Worcester, Mass.

The center said data provided by the districts from 2006 indicated a gap between the percentage of female students and the percentage of female student-athletes.

In Clark County, the gap was 9.7 percentage points, the center noted.

A news release from the center stated that the lack of opportunities for girls is “reflected in the fact that many schools do not offer girls teams in such state-sanctioned sports as swimming, golf and tennis.”

All of the Clark County School District’s Class 4A and 3A schools offer girls teams in each of the three named sports.
 

The school district's athletic office did not return a call seeking comment.
