BASEBALL: Mitchell leads Gaels to title in Chris Moon Classic

Matt Mitchell threw five shutout innings Friday to lead Bishop Gorman’s baseball team to a 9-0 victory over Canyon Del Oro (Ariz.) in the championship game of the Chris Moon Classic in Tucson, Arizona.

Mitchell allowed two hits and struck out 10. Brian Coffey struck out two in two scoreless innings of relief to complete the shutout.

Myles Denson had four hits and an RBI to lead Gorman’s offense. Beau Capanna and Austin Wells each added two hits and two RBIs for the Gaels.

St. Laurence (Ill.) 13, Rancho 3 — At Tucson, Arizona, the Vikings took advantage of two errors, three hit batters and three walks to score six runs in the fourth inning en route to the six-inning win in the Chris Moon Classic.

Rancho’s Joey Walls went 2-for-2 with a run, and Angel Walker was 2-for-3 with a double for the Rams, who committed eight errors.

Shadow Ridge 6, Springville (Utah) 1 — At St. George, Utah, Justin Lee went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs to lead the Mustangs over the Red Devils in the Snow Canyon Classic.

Isaiah Blaylock added a solo home run for Shadow Ridge, and Quinn Ayers went 2-for-3 with a double and a run.

Jesse Meyer allowed a run on four hits in four innings to get the win. He struck out four with one walk.

Adam Rodriguez hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for Springville.

Herriman (Utah) 3, Shadow Ridge 2 — At St. George, Utah, Herriman scored three runs in the third and held off Shadow Ridge in the Snow Canyon Classic.

Shadow Ridge rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Kyle Gaura was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Bryan Trujillo, and Koby Millner scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Tevin Reynolds.

But Hunter Houtz got Lee to pop out to shortstop with runners at the corners to end the game.

Kyle Krogstad and Braxton Boyle each went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Herriman. Collin Wilson threw five shutout innings with six strikeouts to get the victory.

Needles 19-18, Calvary Chapel 0-0 — At Calvary Chapel, Jayden Yeager fired a no-hitter in the first game, and the Mustangs posted a pair of five-inning shutouts to sweep the Lions.

Yeager struck out 11 and walked seven.

Trenton Poe-Evans added a three-run homer in the opener for Needles, which scored 13 runs in the first inning.

Poe-Evans fired a three-hitter in the second game, striking out 12 with four walks.

Yeager added a double and a triple in the nightcap for the Mustangs.
