BASEBALL: Panthers rally in sixth inning to top Centennial

Sam Powers tripled home the go-ahead run and scored an insurance run during a seven-run sixth inning that lifted Palo Verde’s baseball team to an 8-6 win at Centennial on Saturday.

The Panthers trailed 6-1 before starting the sixth by having the first five batters reach safely on two errors, two walks and a single. Cobi Fiechtner then singled to right field to plate Nolan Erickson to tie the game.

Powers ripped an 0-1 pitch to deep right for a triple to give Palo Verde the lead, and he scored two batters later on an error.

Powers was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Fiechtner went 2-for-4 for the Panthers.

Hayden Rosenkrantz and Jake Rogers each went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.

Desert Oasis 12, Cimarron-Memorial 11 — At Cimarron, Nic Lane went 4-for-4 with a double and two runs to help the Diamondbacks hold off the Spartans.

Brett Brocoff was 3-for-5 with a double, and Isaiah Raiano went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs for Desert Oasis, which took a 12-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh before the Spartans rallied and put the potential tying run on first base with one out, but couldn’t advance the runner.

Aaron Roberts and Cole Schaefer each went 2-for-4 for Desert Oasis.

Alexander Marco was 3-for-5 with a double, and Noah Parker went 2-for-4 with two doubles for Cimarron, which also got a home run from Diego Cardoso. Trevor Doyle and Jaret Godman each went 2-for-4 for Cimarron.

Faith Lutheran 5, Liberty 3 — At Faith Lutheran, Kyle Poser got the Patriots’ Omar Ortiz to ground into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded to preserve a victory for the Crusaders.

Liberty got the first two runners on base to start the seventh, and a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Rogers advanced both runners. After a walk to Justin Lutes, Poser got Ortiz to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

Brandon Davis went 2-for-4 with a home run, and Zack Trageton was 2-for-2 with a double for Faith Lutheran.

Jordan Moreno was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Lutes and Ortiz each added two hits for Liberty.

Shadow Ridge 5, Durango 2 — At Durango, Jake Wilson’s grand slam keyed a five-run first inning that propelled the Mustangs by the Trailblazers.

Wilson’s homer was the first hit of the game for Shadow Ridge, which took advantage of an error, two walks and a hit batter to score one run and load the bases. The Mustangs finished with only three hits.

Steven Giatti was 3-for-3, and Charles Smith and Richard Mascarenas each went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Durango.

Bishop Gorman 5, Legacy 0 — At Legacy, Chris Fredericksen and four relievers combined on a three-hitter to lead the Gaels by the Longhorns.

Fredericksen threw two innings and struck out four without allowing a hit. Jack Kirvin, Jarrod Billig, Nate Swanis and Vinny DeCesare combined to throw five scoreless innings of relief.

Beau Capanna went 2-for-3 and scored four runs for Gorman.

Anthony Lomeli was 2-for-3 for Legacy.

Rancho 9, Desert Hills (Utah) 3 — At Rancho, Anthony Munoz and Jaeger McDowell combined on a five-hitter to help the Rams top the Thunder.

Layton Walls and Miguel Elicerio each went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI for Rancho, which scored all of its runs in the fifth inning. Braulio Santiaguin was 2-for-3 for Rancho.
