BASEBALL: Tech scores two runs in eighth to down Chaparral

David Gulasarian’s bases-loaded single with two outs in the top of the eighth inning plated Sebastian Fitzgerald with the go-ahead run, and Jalen Birch continued home on a throwing error on the play as Tech’s baseball team defeated host Chaparral 3-1 on Thursday.

With one out in the eighth, Fitzgerald reached and moved to second on an error. Birch was intentionally walked.

After a pop out, both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Drew Urquiza was intentionally walked to set the table for Gulasarian.

Chandler Gehring was 2-for-5 for Tech.

Alexis Acosta carried a no-hitter in the sixth for the Roadrunners. He went the distance on a three-hitter and struck out eight.

Boulder City 18, Moapa Valley 3 — At Overton, winning pitcher Peyton Koopman went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs as the Eagles routed the Pirates in five innings.

Austin Wishard was 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, and Preston Van Diest was 2-for-3 with two runs for Boulder City, which trailed 3-0 after three innings.

Austin Shepard had a two-run single to highlight the Eagles’ eight-run fourth. Koopman hit a two-run homer and Wishard had a run-scoring triple as Boulder City scored 10 runs in the top of the fifth.

Koopman went the distance, striking out seven and allowing two earned runs.

Riley Longman was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and J.R. Redd went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Moapa Valley.

Desert Pines 7, Sunrise Mountain 2 — At Sunrise Mountain, Jose Avelino threw a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts as the Jaguars topped the Miners.

Juan Castaneda was 3-for-4 with a double and RBI, and Steven Laureano went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Desert Pines, which led 6-2 after four innings.

Andy Mojena pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief and had an RBI for Sunrise Mountain.

Del Sol 12, Virgin Valley 1 — At Del Sol, Cordell Bowie was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Luis Socorro went 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead the Dragons by the Bulldogs in five innings.

Jorge Costa threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts for Del Sol, which got a double from Phil Talamo and a triple from Aaron Squires.

Ricky Trujillo and Jayden Perkins each hit doubles for Virgin Valley.

Faith Lutheran 10, Pahrump Valley 2 — At Pahrump, Cruz Daddario went the distance and allowed four hits, and Alex Giuliani drove in three runs as the Crusaders topped the Trojans.

Daddario carried a shutout into the bottom of the seventh inning and finished with five strikeouts and one walk. He also went 1-for-2 and singled in a run as part of Faith Lutheran’s four-run fourth inning.

Giuliani went 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the first and a two-run single in the sixth. Joshua Harmonay was 2-for-5 with a double, and Jason Eary was 2-for-4 with a run for Faith Lutheran.

Chad Jones had a run-scoring double in the second, and Blake Giuliani doubled and scored for the Crusaders.

Josh Mortensen went 2-for-3, and Carlos Rivera was 1-for-3 with an RBI for Pahrump Valley.

Shadow Ridge 4, Durango 3 — At Durango, Eric Jordan’s single with one out in the top of the seventh inning plated Jakob Chambers and Tyler Burton with the tying and go-ahead runs as the Mustangs edged the Trailblazers.

Shadow Ridge trailed 3-1 before Quinn Ayers singled to lead off the seventh. Kyle Gaura was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. After a strikeout, Burton singled to center to score Ayers and move pinch-runner Chambers to third. Burton moved to second on the throw.

Jordan followed with the go-ahead hit.

Jake Wilson struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh. Wilson tossed a five-hitter and struck out 14.

Ayers was 3-for-3, and Burton went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for the Mustangs.

Joey Shawhan was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Trailblazers.

Las Vegas 12, Canyon Springs 0 — At Canyon Springs, Mikel Smith tossed a five-inning three-hitter to lead the Wildcats by the Pioneers.

Julio Seperich was 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, three runs and two RBIs, and Andrew Aleman was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Las Vegas.

Carlos Alcala was 2-for-2 with a double for Canyon Springs.

Bishop Gorman 13, Menlo School (Calif.) 3 — At Gorman, Matt Hudgins went 2-for-3 with two home runs, three runs and three RBIs, and Cadyn Grenier was 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, three runs and three RBIs to help the Gaels rout the Knights in six innings at the Desert Classic.

Antonio Rainone was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and two RBIs for Gorman, which also got three RBIs from Grant Robbins.

Winning pitcher Matt Mitchell allowed one hit and one walk while striking out seven in four innings.

Mountain View 5-23, Spring Mountain 0-0 — At Mountain View, Chase Ottofy struck out 19 batters in the first game and combined with Josh Stanton on a five-inning no-hitter in the nightcap as the Saints swept the Golden Eagles.

Ottofy allowed only one hit in the opener. He struck out 10 over four innings to earn the victory in the second game.

Jeremy Archer, Matthew Tom and Jay Naik each drove in a run for the Saints in the first game.

Stanton went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and five RBIs in the second game. Zach Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and Connor LeBoeuf was 2-for-3 with a double in the nightcap.
