BASKETBALL: Top-ranked Pilots suffer first loss

Wayne (Ohio) limited Findlay Prep to one basket in overtime as the Warriors knocked off the Pilots 76-68 on Monday in the Flyin’ To The Hoop Classic in Dayton, Ohio.

It was the first loss of the season for the Pilots (17-1), who are ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today.

Findlay’s only basket in overtime came when Derryck Thornton completed a three-point play to cut the lead to 69-68 with 2:05 to go. The Pilots wouldn’t score again.

Trey Landers had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead Wayne, which got 18 points from Rodrick Caldwell.

Thornton scored 19 to pace Findlay.

Montverde Academy (Fla.) 76, Bishop Gorman 57 — At Springfield, Mass., the Gaels turned the ball over 33 times in the loss to the Eagles.

The game was tied at 27 at the half, and Montverde led 48-43 after three quarters, but the Eagles, ranked No. 4 nationally by USA Today, pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Ben Simmons, the No. 1 player in the class of 2015 according to Rivals.com, had 36 points, nine rebounds and three steals to lead Montverde. Simmons has signed with Louisiana State.

Sophomore Charles O’Bannon had 22 points to lead Gorman, which held the lead just once after an O’Bannon basket made it 27-25 late in the first half.

Gorman’s two highly-touted big men — Chase Jeter and Stephen Zimmerman — combined for 14 points and 12 rebounds. Both are ranked in the top 10 in the class of 2015 by Rivals.

GIRLS

Rancho 54, Agassi Prep 41 — At Rancho, LaKissa Martin had 16 points to power the Rams over the Stars.

Maureen Macato added 11 points for Rancho, which outscored Agassi Prep 16-8 in the third quarter to take control.

Javoulaee Green led the Stars with 18 points, and teammate Azaria Conway-Wilson scored 10.
