2A GIRLS ALL-STATE: Needles’ Chavira, Lynx’s Florence represent South on first team

Gena Chavira and Melanie Florence powered their respective teams into the Class 2A state tournament this season.

The senior forwards also helped power the Class 2A all-state team, as voted on by the coaches.

Chavira, a small forward for Needles, and Florence, a post player for Lincoln County, were the only players from the 2A Southern League named to the first team.

Mountain View’s backcourt duo of junior Briana Marruffo and senior Patrice Marshall received second-team honors. Needles sophomore guard Abby Chandler and Lake Mead sophomore guard Taylor Badua-Kono also were named to the second team.

Player of the Year went to Pershing County sophomore guard Sarita Jo Condie, who led the Mustangs to the first state title in program history.

Pershing County’s Steve Cerini was named Coach of the Year.
