Coronado scores early, turns back Silverado
November 8, 2014 - 12:13 am
Coronado’s football team got all the points it needed in the first quarter on Friday and shut down visiting Silverado, 20-7 in a Sunrise Region quarterfinal.
The game looked like it could be a rout early, as Coronado (7-3) jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 2-yard touchdown pass from Spencer Cofer to Kainoa Granstrom and a 22-yard score by Tanner Gorski on a lateral swing pass.
But Silverado (3-7) answered with a 60-yard touchdown throw from Mitchell Ballard to Addison Lyon, who came out of the backfield to streak down the left sideline.
Coronado got its lead back to double digits later in the quarter on a 20-yard touchdown run by Nick Trejo, but that was the end of the scoring.
Silverado forced two second-half turnovers, but the Coronado defense stood firm, and Trejo used his fresh legs to pick up some key first downs and run out the clock for the Cougars.
Trejo finished with up 87 yards rushing for Coronado, while Lyon was the workhorse for Silverado, garnering 66 yards on 24 carries.
The Cougars will host Liberty (8-2) in a region semifinal on Nov. 14.
