Depleted Aggies answer questions with first-game win

Arbor View’s football team faced a lot of question marks as the Aggies kicked off the season Friday at Rancho.

With 32 seniors gone from the 2009 squad, Aggies coach Dan Barnson knew varsity would be a different experience for most of this year’s players.

Consider some of those questions answered.

Arbor View used its double-wing offense to pile up 352 rushing yards and blitzed the host Rams, 42-7 and open the season with a win.

“Running the football is what we do,” said Barnson, whose team used 10 players to carry the ball Friday. “At times, we have six seniors on one side of the ball and seven sophomores on the other.

"In the crystal ball, I wish we could run the ball like this. However, when we get to Northwest division play, we must be able to throw the ball.”

Arbor View broke open a 7-7 game by scoring 21 points in the second quarter. The Aggies gained 225 yards on the ground in the opening half, keeping the ball for nearly 16 minutes.

Junior running back Jordan Godman led the Aggies with 100 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries, all in the first half. Godman had 11-, 43- and 15-yard touchdown runs as Arbor View rolled to a 28-7 cushion at the half.

Arbor View quarterback Justin Nehls threw a pair of touchdowns — 11 yards to Steve Burns and a 59-yard bomb to Roderick Eason.

Rancho barely eked out 158 total yards, with 90 on the ground. The Rams’ lone score came on an eight-yard run by quarterback Will Gosse-Gardet early in the second quarter.
