Hughes, Pirates hold off Rattlers

Moapa Valley's Kasen Hughes rushed for 193 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries on Friday, and the Pirates (11-1) edged the Mojave (6-5) 36-32 in a Division I-A state quarterfinal.

Moapa Valley secured a spot in the state semifinals at 1 p.m. Nov. 10.

Hughes scored on runs of 2, 43 and 47 yards. Conner Mortensen added two rushing scores, including a 15-yarder in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Mojave sophomoore Zack Arave completed 11 of 20 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns. He threw an 84-yard TD pass to Marcus Hines in the first quarter.

Hines made three catches for 109 yards, and returned a kickoff 78 yards.
