No. 1 Gorman stays on a roll, routs Shadow Ridge

Bishop Gorman’s football team scored six passing and two rushing touchdowns and gave up just 67 yards on defense Thursday in a 56-0 home win over Shadow Ridge.

Sophomore quarterback Tate Martell found tight end Alize Jones for a 50-yard TD strike on the first play from scrimmage, and connected with Tyjon Lindsey on the first play of their next drive for a 75-yard score over the middle.

Martell tossed a fade to the back left corner of the end zone to Cordell Broadus for a 5-yard score, and Russell Booze capped the next drive with a 1-yard TD plunge to give No. 1 Gorman (7-0, 1-0 Southwest) a 28-0 lead with 2:53 left in the second quarter.

After getting a fumble recovery by Carey Conner on the ensuing kickoff, Martell fired a bullet four plays later to Lindsey just inside the front right pylon for a 10-yard TD to make it 35-0.

Gorman’s Ryan Garrett snuffed out a fake punt attempt on Shadow Ridge’s next drive, and backup QB Danny Hong hit Austin Arnold for a 7-yard TD strike just before the half.

Jaylen Carroll scored on a 5-yard scamper in the third quarter, and Hong completed a 3-yard fade to Noah Hill to cap the scoring in the fourth quarter.

Martell completed 8 of 11 passes for 201 yards, and Haskell Garrett tallied eight tackles and three sacks for the Gaels.

Running back Christian DeJesus rushed for 60 yards on 24 carries, and Malik Jackson provided 76 kickoff return yards for the Mustangs (2-3, 0-1), who got a fumble recovery by Casey Knoblauch.
