Wharton, Vikings get first win

Valley's Garic Wharton rushed for 131 yards and passed for 91 to carry the Vikings (1-4, 1-1 Northeast) to a 28-12 road win over Chaparral on Friday.

Wharton ran for an 11-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Valley led 22-0 at halftime on a 5-yard run by Roland Hodge, Wharton’s 2-point conversion pass to Taylor Herrington, Suki Wilks’ 1-yard touchdown and Wharton’s 44-yard TD pass to Mitchell Deas. The Vikings finished with 241 rushing yards.

Chaparral’s Zachary Luciano passed for 113 yards, including touchdowns of 21 and 3 yards to Bre Onte Griffin.

Greg Tucker caught four passes for 104 yards and rushed for 72 yards on 15 carries for the Cowboys (0-5, 0-2).
