3A TENNIS: The Meadows boys, girls sweep state titles in Reno

The Meadows’ Daniel Pereira — the team’s No. 3 singles player — upset Boulder City’s Breton Erlanger 6-1 in the second round Friday to break a tie, remove a potential tiebreaker and help the Mustangs capture their first state title with a 10-8 win over the Eagles.

Boulder City junior Lani Potter has state title in sights

Lani Potter went to work on improving around the greens, and the results have been evident this fall. She has won or shared medalist honors in five of the Eagles’ six matches and established herself as the overwhelming favorite for the individual title when the Class 3A girls tournament tees off next month.

CROSS COUNTRY: Milton Amezcua leads Green Valley boys to win

Green Valley boys cross country runner Milton Amezcua won the 3.1-mile race Wednesday, and the Gators had four of the top five finishers to win a eight-team meet at Cornerstone Park.

I-A SWIMMING: Boulder City boys, girls earn titles

Boulder City’s boys made it somewhat interesting by scoring 110 points to defeat second-place Sierra Vista by 25 points. But the girls dominated throughout, scoring 156 points to easily get past second-place Truckee, which finished with 111 points. It was the sixth consecutive championship for the Eagles’ boys and the fourth straight for the girls.

SOFTBALL: Gorrell, Las Vegas shut down Silverado

Skylar Gorrell threw a four-hitter and struck out five Thursday to lead Las Vegas High’s softball team to a 6-1 home victory over Silverado.
