RENO — The first day of the Division I state golf tournament at the Montreux Golf and Country Club greeted players with chilly weather and high winds, making the already difficult alpine course all that much harder.

Teconna Dyer hit a tie-breaking free throw with 24 seconds to play, and Bianca Matlock added a layup eight seconds later to lift host Las Vegas High’s girls basketball team to a 53-50 win over Shadow Ridge on Thursday.
Eldorado’s Carmonte Jones hit two free throws to break a 63-63 tie on Thursday, and the Sundevils held on for a 67-63 road win at Liberty in boys basketball.
Desert Oasis’ Brooke Locey has participated in a cross country meet at Veteran’s Memorial Park seven times since her sophomore year, but never came out on top.
