The Pioneers will benefit from the transfer of junior Jordan Baca, who played in California last season. Carmona said Baca will lead off and play shortstop.

The team’s two pitchers, Miangel Coleman and Lorian Acosta, both are seeing their first varsity action this year.

“The team has been working really hard on the fundamentals of the game,” Carmona said.

Cerrone (6-6, 3.79 ERA, 64.2 innings) returns and will be the staff’s ace, and Day (.389, 32 RBIs) and Love (.412, 3 home runs, 13 RBIs) should be among the leaders on offense.

“The team will need to lean on solid defense, and will need to get some solid pitching from Cerrone,” Livreri said. “The team has a strong nucleus of returners with experience.”

Returning letter winners (starters): Ten (six)

Still, the team returns 10 letter winners, including Montoya (.508 average) and Rivas (.333).

“At face value, it seems like we are returning a lot of experience with 10 letter winners in this group, but there will definitely be a big learning curve with new faces at key positions,” Coleman said.

Coleman also credited senior Britney DeGraff with stepping up to fill in the void left by Brown in the circle.

“Ultimately the level of our success this season will be determined by the amount of improvement we make on a daily basis through our attitude and effort, both in the classroom and on the field,” Coleman said.

Clark was overmatched last season and hasn’t won since April 4, 2014.

“Our No. 1 team goal is the same every year: to win state,” Chilman said. “With all but three players returning, the team is hoping to improve on its third-place finish from last year. With Sierra Vista and Spring Valley returning their top players, the Sunset League should be difficult again. Out of the three of us, we hope we are not the odd team out of the state tournament.

“With seven returning seniors, leadership should not be an issue. If the team chooses to stick together and if they desire to enjoy attempting going from good to great, this should be a memorable season.”

With the return of Brittany Schelper from injury back to the lineup, that gives us another weapon at the plate.

“Come May, we are hoping to put Laughlin back on the softball map as a team to beat.”
