20-year-old killed in crash on Bonanza

A 20-year-old Las Vegas man died after a two-vehicle collision about 11:30 p.m. Friday near Bonanza Road and Nellis Boulevard.

The name of the man was not released.

Police said he was driving a 2000 Dodge Neon west on Bonanza following a 1994 Chevrolet Silverado truck. The driver of the Neon tried to pass slower traffic in the left lane from a two-way turn lane, police said.

The driver then re-entered westbound travel lanes and lost control crossing into the right travel lane, where it struck the left rear of the Silverado.

Police said the Neon then slid west, striking the curb. It then continued west onto a sidewalk, where it struck a light pole, a fire hydrant and a fence.

Bystanders pulled the driver from the Neon. He was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Silverado, identified as Alex Lopez, 19, was able to regain control of his truck and pull around the corner before stopping.
