Architecture contract OK’d for Nevada execution chamber
CARSON CITY — A state panel on Tuesday approved a nearly $94,000 contract with the architectural and engineering firm of Kittrell Garlock & Associates of Las Vegas to design a new execution facility at Ely State Prison.
The Board of Examiners, including Gov. Brian Sandoval, approved the contract.
The Nevada Legislature in the 2015 session approved spending $858,000 to build a new execution chamber at Nevada's maximum security prison at Ely as requested by the Department of Corrections.
The facility will be be built by remodeling the courtroom area and part of the visitation area in the prison administration building to accommodate executions.
The Ely State Prison execution chamber will replace the facility at the now closed Nevada State Prison in Carson City. The state's death row population is housed at Ely.
Nevada uses lethal injection as the method of execution.
The contract runs through June 2019.
