A northwest Arizona teenager critically injured in a go-kart crash in a public park in north Kingman died Tuesday afternoon at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas.
Carl Mecom, 14, suffered back injuries and a broken jaw during the
6:35 p.m. Sunday incident at Neal Butler Park, said Mohave County Sheriff's office spokeswoman Trish Carter.
Mecom and other children in their neighborhood were taking turns racing a homemade go-kart over a pedestrian loop in the park when he lost control and crashed into a cable strung between posts to prohibit vehicle entry into a portion of the park, Carter said.
Investigators determined that the activity was unsupervised by adults and that it was the second time the kids had run the go-kart through the park loop.
