Baseball the game for Jaden Agassi
October 10, 2010 - 11:00 pm
Baseball is No. 1 with Jaden Agassi, the son of Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, former world No. 1s in tennis.
"He's a fanatic about baseball," his father said Saturday on the red carpet before hosting his 15th Grand Slam for Children at Wynn Las Vegas.
Jaden, a gifted athlete who plays on a 10-and-under baseball team called the Vegas Venom, "calls me all the time, telling me, 'Dad, did you see what just happened? (Derek) Jeter just hit a double,' or, 'They got the bases loaded.' "
Jaden turns 9 Oct. 26.
They've been to "a lot" of big league games, and "we hope to get a chance to see a World Series game," said Andre Agassi, who was a ball boy at age 9 at the Alan King tournament in Las Vegas.
When I asked whether Jaden had a favorite team, his mother tossed her hair back, looked skyward and broke into a broad, knowing smile.
"The Giants," his dad said. "Yankees, No. 2."
San Francisco's pitching ace Tim Lincecum is his favorite player. "The 'Freak' is his man," Andre Agassi said.
VEGAS MEMORIES
A Las Vegas keepsake has a prominent place in the home of Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski and his wife, Mickie.
A red velvet-framed menu from Michael's, a fine-dining icon formerly located at the Barbary Coast, is hanging in the Krzyzewskis' living room.
"It's our favorite place in Las Vegas," Mickie Krzyzewski told me during their red carpet appearance at the Agassi event Saturday.
The restaurant holds many special memories for the family.
One of their daughters got engaged there during one of their many family gatherings at the high-end eatery, which relocated to the South Point when the Barbary Coast was sold.
Another daughter celebrated her 21st birthday there.
The Krzyzewskis have had plenty to celebrate in the past couple of years: Coach K guided the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal two years ago, Duke to its fourth NCAA crown this year and Team USA to a world championship this year.
THE SCENE AND HEARD
Elvis impersonator Jesse Garon left the building earlier than planned Sunday.
He was at the Las Vegas Hilton for a 10/10/10 booking at 8 a.m. involving a Chinese couple on the sixth floor.
After singing "Love Me Tender," Garon launched into "Viva Las Vegas," but the racket got security's attention, and he was shown the door. It was one of his nine 10/10/10 bookings.
SIGHTINGS
Donny Osmond, on one knee proposing to Debbie, his wife of 32 years, on Sunday in front of the Trevi fountain at Forum Shops at Caesars. He was hosting a 10/10/10 promotion involving 10 couples who simultaneously got engaged at 10:10 a.m. on the 10th day of the 10th month. Their son, Don Jr., got married Oct. 1.
