Birthday bash for Kardashian

The Kardashians are in town today to celebrate Kim's 29th birthday at The Venetian's club Tao and to shoot video for their E! reality show.

The other day, Kim was getting her hair done for the show when she called to catch me up on things. I asked whether she remembers her best-ever and worst-ever birthday gifts.

Best: a BMW at 16.

"You can't beat that," she said.

Worst: a creepy doll a few years ago.

"It was so freaky looking. It was a porcelain doll. It just looked weird, and I don't collect them, so it just seemed really odd to get for my birthday."

This year, she isn't hoping for any specific presents.

"Usually, I'm like, 'Oh my God, I want this and this.' And I have all my birthday lists. But this year, I don't really care. I think it's weird I'm turning 29. It freaks me out a little."

Why?

"We're all growing up so fast. Sometimes, I think of myself as in my younger 20s, so it's just weird when you say 29. That's almost 30."

Kim officially turns 29 on Wednesday.

But you can see her and other Kardashians -- and their mates, of course -- on the red carpet at 8:30 p.m. outside Tao. Doors open at 10 p.m. Admission: $20 for men; $20 for women; local women get in free.

JAY WALKING TO THE MIRAGE

Jay Leno performs tonight-Saturday at The Mirage. For my column in today's Neon, Leno and I talk about his on-air jokes regarding David Letterman's affair/extortion victimization.

But I also asked Jay about his frequent Vegas performances. (He also performs Oct. 30-31 and Nov. 6-7 at The Mirage.)

"It's the best town," he says. "It's the most professional town."

In other cities, fans sometimes shout, "We can't hear" and "We can't see."

"The great thing about Vegas is, the lights and the sound are always perfect. If a show isn't working in Vegas, it's your fault. It's not the lighting system. It's not the sound system."
