‘Bones’ Jones gets UFC 100 rolling

A sellout crowd of about 14,000 is packing the Mandalay Bay Events Center tonight for UFC 100. The arena was mostly full by the end of the night’s fourth fight, in which Jon “Bones” Jones defeated “Irish” Jake O’Brien by submission in the second round.

The 21-year-old “Bones” is a rising star in the UFC, according to Review-Journal mixed martial arts beat writer Adam Hill, who not only writes about the sport but also is rumored to be a jiu-jitsu specialist.

By spinning around and hitting O’Brien in the head with his elbow, “Bones” was able to take control. He forced O’Brien to the ground, where he almost squeezed the life out him with a guillotine choke. The victory by “Bones,” who was about a 4-1 favorite, started to energize the crowd.

Blood and guts

Shannon Gugerty defeated Matt Grice in the first of tonight’s 11 fights. Gugerty won by first-round submission.

The result of the second fight was an upset as Tom Lawlor used a guillotine choke to beat CB Dollaway in the first round. Dollaway was a minus-250 favorite. If you’ve never been caught in a guillotine choke, you’re not missing anything.

Don Hyun Kim won a unanimous decision over T.J. Grant in a relatively boring fight.

The fifth fight, between Jim Miller and Mac Danzig, was an all-out brawl. Miller opened a nasty gash on Danzig’s head early and won by unanimous decision, 30-27. Danzig was considered a live underdog at plus-150, and he was a gutsy brawler, but he ended up red-faced, literally.

“Was this the bloodiest fight you’ve even been involved in?” UFC commentator Joe Rogan asked Miller.

“Yes, by far,” Miller said.

Old-timer tames the ‘Psycho’

The light heavyweight fight between 44-year-old Mark Coleman and Stephan Bonnar, known as “The American Psycho,” was scheduled to go three rounds. Bonnar closed as a minus-360 favorite. The betting public and MMA experts barely gave the old-timer Coleman a chance.

But the fight went the distance. Coleman took Bonnar down in the first round, bloodied Bonnar’s face in the second round and had the stamina to finish. Coleman whipped the kid in a major upset. All three judges scored it 29-28, but it didn’t appear that close.

Six fights down, five to go. The pay-per-view main card is set to begin at 7 p.m.
