California inmate accused of using cellphone to set up robbery

An inmate serving a 16-year prison sentence for robbery is looking at more time behind bars after authorities said he used a cellphone to set up a plan to rob a man of a Rolex watch advertised on Craigslist.

The inmate, Jermaine Shermal Nelson, is facing charges in connection with a robbery that took place at a San Mateo, Calif., shopping mall last August, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Monday.

Nelson, 37, used a cellphone at the California Men's Colony prison in San Luis Obispo to call the man, who was offering his Rolex for sale for $14,000, Wagstaffe said.

California prison inmates are not allowed to have cellphones . Authorities were not sure how Nelson got the phone.

Authorities allege Lamar Diante Cox, also 37, met the seller and robbed him of the advertised watch as well as another Rolex valued at $9,600.
