Cooling stations opened around the valley to offer heat relief
June 4, 2010 - 11:00 pm
As temperatures soared Friday in the Las Vegas Valley, officials opened eight additional cooling stations to shelter homeless and other people from scorching daytime heat.
The cooling stations, in recreation centers and other facilities, provide people with water and a temporary escape from heat during the warmest part of the day.
Temperatures are expected to hit a high of 106 today and to continue climbing into early next week, according to the National Weather Service, which issued an excessive heat warning for this afternoon through Monday evening in the valley.
In addition to the temporary cooling stations, which are scheduled to be open at least through Wednesday, people can take refuge in three daytime summer shelters that already are operating in the downtown homeless corridor as part of an inclement weather shelter program through the Southern Nevada Planning Coalition's Committee on Homelessness.
People can dial 211 from any phone to find the nearest cooling station.
