CSN students participate in World Food Championships

The inaugural World Food Championships made its home on the Las Vegas Strip in early November of 2012, as three Caesars Entertainment properties with hundreds of top chefs, cooking pros and average Joes competed for a prize purse of $300,000 and ultimate bragging rights across seven categories: BBQ, Chili, Burger, Sandwich, Side Dish, Recipe and a World Chef Challenge.
The World Food Championships begged only one question: Which dish deserves the title of "best." All bets were off as the final table event culminated in a battle between a professional chef, restaurateurs and a competitive barbecue cooking team, each team bringing its finest interpretation of "best."
Recognizing the growing popularity of the food-service industry and the invaluable experience gained from hands-on opportunities, the World Food Championships invited culinary students from the College of Southern Nevada to be a part of what has been heralded as the "ultimate food event." Student volunteers from CSN played integral parts of the day-of-event production from pantry stocking and category runners to assistants for famous chefs during the World Chef Challenge category competition .
"My experience in working with the World Food Championships has opened up doors I never would have had otherwise," said Sabrina Alvarado, a student volunteer from CSN. "I am very grateful to have seen other people's passions and creativity at work as it has now inspired my own."
Alvarado will be graduating from CSN in the fall as a pastry and design and culinary arts double major.
CSN looks forward to participating with the WFC production in 2013. Planning for the 2013 World Food Championships is well under way, and it promises to be bigger and better than 2012. For information click on www.worldfood
