Deadline nears for Employer Support Freedom Award nominees
Since the Iraq war began, the Review-Journal has written often about the Nevada National Guard and Reserve members who have called up — many for more than one tour of duty — as well as about the employers who have made adjustments to accommodate the Guardsmen and Reservists who have had to leave their jobs for extended periods of time to serve their country.
Now the Department of Defense is looking to recognize some of those employers who have taken extra steps to support their military employees.
The department’s Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve agency, is accepting nominations from servicemembers and their families for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. Nominations will be accepted through Jan. 19 at www.FreedomAward.mil.
Fifteen recipients from across the nation will be selected, representing small employers, large employers and public sector employers. The 2009 recipients will be announced this spring.
Agency spokeswoman Caroline DeHaan said 15 nominees from Nevada have already been received but the department is hoping to get more before the nomination period ends next week.
