Downtown art museum is in works

The Tamares Group, which owns three downtown casinos, is in talks with the city of Las Vegas to open a contemporary arts museum in the East Fremont district, Mayor Oscar Goodman said Thursday.
The museum would be in the city-owned 601 Fremont St. building, which is now vacant. Tamares' proposal was one of six the city received after another company failed to open a nightclub in the building.
Other proposals were also for nightspots, Goodman said.
"Clubs are great, but clubs can go other places," he said.
The 48,000-square-foot windowless building also will house an arthouse cinema and a small nightclub or restaurant, he said.
A Tamares spokesman said Thursday that the company did not want to comment yet.
The announcement adds to a flurry of good news for the stretch of Fremont Street that includes Neonopolis and the year-old East Fremont, which is being developed into an entertainment district.
Next week, the Las Vegas City Council is scheduled to consider a liquor license for Don't Tell Mama, a piano lounge that's moving into 517 Fremont, next to the Beauty Bar.
