Driver dies in accident north of speedway

One person is dead following a head-on collision on Las Vegas Boulevard just north of Las Vegas Motor Speedway Friday morning, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

About 9:10 a.m., a man driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo northbound on Las Vegas Boulevard was seen driving the wrong way before striking a tractor-trailer, NHP Sgt. Kevin Honea said.

It is unknown why the man began driving into the southbound lanes, but witnesses say he hit the tractor-trailer, which was carrying gravel, head on.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not identified by NHP.

The tractor-trailer driver was transported to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
