Fire sends air conditioning unit through roof

A vacant house erupted in flames Monday afternoon near Maryland Parkway and St. Louis Avenue.

According to officials, firefighters responded to the house in the 1600 block of St. Louis Avenue shortly after noon. Soon after they arrived, flames burst through the top of the one-story house, causing the roof to collapse and sending the air conditioning unit tumbling to the ground.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire in about 30 minutes.

Neighbors told officials that the house had been vacant for many years, and was often occupied by homeless people.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Damage was estimated at $150,000.
