Freezing temperatures lead to two deaths in Elko County

ELKO - Subzero temperatures are being blamed for the deaths of two people in Elko County as an arctic air mass keeps much of Northern Nevada in a deep freeze.

The National Weather Service said temperatures in Elko have fallen to 15 degrees below zero in recent days and have not been above freezing since Christmas Eve.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported a 62-year-old homeless woman who was camping along the Humboldt River was found dead Monday.

Authorities said a man who was apparently walking home slipped and fell. He was unable to get up and died of exposure. He was found Tuesday.

Overnight lows in the Reno area fell into the single digits Tuesday night.

Forecasters said the cold will remain through the weekend.
