Gibbons sets Nevada veto record

Gov. Jim Gibbons vetoed 20 bills today, breaking the all-time state record for vetoes in a single legislative session set more than 140 years ago.

Before today, Gibbons had vetoed 11 bills passed by the current Legislature. Adding today's vetoes, which included his vetoes of the eight tax and spending bills making up the $6.8 billion budget, he has rejected 31 bills.

The previous record of 30 vetoes was set by former Gov. Henry Blasdel in the state's very first legislative session, in 1864-65, according to the Legislative Counsel Bureau.
