Henderson plans two street festivals in April, November
March 8, 2014 - 2:46 pm
The city of Henderson is bringing back a car-free street festival that found some success with its debut in November.
It will host two Stroll ‘n Roll events along the southbound lanes of Paseo Verde Parkway, from Valle Verde Drive to the Multigenerational Center at 250 S. Green Valley Parkway on April 12 and Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both events are free.
With the lanes closed to motorized traffic, residents can use alternative transportation such as bikes, skates and non-motorized scooters to move from event to event.
Entertainment zones will be at Paseo Verde Park, Discovery Park and the Henderson Multigenerational Center, featuring a variety of interactive demonstrations, free exercise classes, food trucks and children’s activities.
The inaugural event in November drew 5,000 people, according to the city.
“It’s not every day you’re told you can play in the streets,” Mayor Andy Hafen said in a statement. “Henderson Stroll ‘n Roll allows citizens to do just that. We close a 1-mile stretch of Paseo Verde Parkway so that everyone can enjoy a car-free way to play, exercise, and have fun.”
The car-free street festival is modeled after the world-famous Ciclovia in Bogotá, Columbia, which is held every Sunday and on holidays.
Similar gatherings modeled after that event are held around the world throughout the year including in Cleveland, Ohio and Denver where the events draw 10,000 people.
