VIRGINIA CITY -- One of Nevada's oldest churches will undergo a $2.1 million seismic retrofit to keep it from being destroyed by an earthquake.
Construction at St. Mary's in the Mountains Catholic Church in Virginia City will take up to a year, said Mike Quilici of the Diocese of Reno. Plans call for the church's walls to be shored up with concrete and its roof to be better secured.
The church was built in 1862 during the height of the Comstock mining boom and rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1875.
