TEMBLOR-PRONE NEVADA

Official urges homeowners to buy earthquake insurance

Most of Nevada's homeowners don't take out quake insurance though Nevada is the third-most active state for quakes after Alaska and California.

The Nevada Division of Insurance says homeowners should consider buying protection that is not afforded by conventional fire insurance.

Nevada Insurance Commissioner Scott Kipper says homeowners should call his division or check its Web site for more information.

Kipper on Friday issued a consumer's guide to earthquake insurance to mark the end of Nevada Earthquake Awareness and Preparedness Week.

Operators are gutting parts of the Tahoe Queen to refurbish its hull.

Aramark Parks Director Austin Sass says the job involves taking out a walk-in freezer and several kitchen grills to make room for repairs that should be finished by May.

The Tahoe Queen, which normally offers Lake Tahoe cruises, is due for an inspection by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Sass says a dozen boatmen were offered other resort jobs with the Tahoe Queen laid up for repairs.

BODY FOUND ON I-80

Authorities trace slain woman back to Wyoming town

Police in Nevada say an unidentified woman found dead with two gunshot wounds more than 16 years ago along Interstate 80 in Elko County spent the last seven months of her life near the town of Afton, Wyo.

The Elko County sheriff's office said hair samples sent to a Salt Lake City lab late last year matched isotope sequences with drinking water that pinpointed where the woman had lived.

Sheriff's Detective Dennis Journigan said he hopes the latest information will help identify the woman and lead to her killer. The woman's body was found nude and posed in the shape of a cross.

The woman is buried in the Elko County cemetery. Authorities said she had blond hair, was about 27 years old, 5 foot 7 inches, 140 pounds, and had given birth to at least one child.
