TOXIC CLEANUP

Agency finds homes, labs safe near site

Homes and schools near the former Wyle Laboratories military and aerospace test site near Norco, Calif., are safe despite the presence of contaminants in and around the facility, the state agency overseeing an investigation and cleanup of the lab reported.

More than 1,000 samples of air and soil around three schools and 27 homes west of the lab were tested, turning up low levels of toxic waste and one chemical that could cause health risks over long exposure, the state Department of Toxic Substances Control found.

One known carcinogen, vinyl chloride, was found at a school, but the chemical was not linked to Wyle.

Rafat Abbasi, a senior project manager for the state agency, maintained that the homes and schools were safe.

The Wyle complex operated from 1959 to 2004. The state began investigating the possible environmental hazards in 2005.

SUSPECT SOUGHT

Police say man tried to get children into SUV

Police are searching for a man they say was wearing only a nun's habit when he approached three young girls Saturday outside a Catholic church in Union City, Calif.

Investigators say the man drove up and ordered them to get into his blue sport utility vehicle.

He then opened the door of the vehicle and revealed that he was nude except for the headpiece as he covered his genitals with both hands, according to a police statement.

The girls ignored his demand and ran into the church. Police says all three girls were under 11 years old.
