Judge in Elko to retire, two months after colleague died

Elko District Judge Mike Memeo is retiring after 15 years on the bench.

Memeo told the Elko Daily Free Press he considers retirement as a new phase in his life, and that living in Shanghai, China, is a possibility.

Memeo, whose retirement is effective Nov. 1, served as the county's chief civil deputy district attorney for 10 years before becoming a judge.

The announcement of his retirement comes two months after the death of Elko District Judge Andrew Puccinelli.

The Commission on Judicial Selection on Nov. 18 will conduct interviews with candidates for both vacancies.

Applicants are facing an Oct. 21 deadline to file for Memeo's seat.
