Judge sentences 21-year-old in 2006 drive-by slaying

A 21-year-old man who took part in a 2006 fatal drive-by was sentenced Tuesday in District Court to 25 years behind bars with the possibility of parole after 10 years.

District Judge Jackie Glass sentenced Shaundrell Gentry, who drove the vehicle used in the shooting of 18-year-old Marcus "Marty" Williams in September 2006 near Martin Luther King and Lake Mead boulevards.

During his sentencing on the second-degree murder conviction, Gentry apologized for the shooting and asked Williams' family for forgiveness.

But Williams' mother, Raymona, said she wanted to know why her son was slain. The shooting also left her other son wounded.

"I just hope this doesn't happen to another family," she said.

Authorities said the victim was a member of Squad-Up, a hybrid gang, but Raymona Williams disputed that.

Gentry was one of three defendants sentenced in connection with the case.

The main defendant, Antwan Jones, who was 15 at the time of the shooting, was previously sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for the slaying. Authorities said Jones was the triggerman.

A third defendant had pleaded guilty to discharging a firearm into a vehicle but was slain in December 2007.

Gentry's attorney, Michael Cristalli, said the sentencing was fair considering that Gentry was not the shooter.

Gentry had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and discharging a firearm.
