Kids to get technical with library programs through April

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is set to offer science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs through April at its libraries.

“The children will learn a variety of topics that are math- and science-related,” said youth services coordinator Mary Nelson Brown. “We developed programs that are tied to the different materials in our collection.”

Children are scheduled to build with Lego, mix colors, make paper airplanes, experiment with static, create a lava lamp and more. The programs are categorized into three age groups: children younger than 5, children 6 to 11 and youths 12 to 17.

“These programs allow us to showcase the materials the libraries have,” Nelson Brown said, “not only to support their homework, but any experiments they may want to do for fun.”

The programs are scheduled to build up to the Las Vegas Science and Technology Festival, scheduled from April 25 to May 3 at various locations throughout the valley. The festival covers natural, applied and health sciences and is hosted by the Las Vegas Natural History Museum.

“(These programs) show children that science and math are things that take place in their world all around them,” Nelson Brown said. “They’re not just learning about it. It’s seeing these things in action and taking it to another level.”

Southwest resident Nikki Hanson said she takes her son Randall to the library at least once a week to expand his curiosity and knowledge.

“Children need ways to challenge their imagination and trigger their interest,” Hanson said. “Sitting on the couch all day watching television and playing video games isn’t going to accomplish that. The programs (at the library) teach them things in ways that they’ll remember.”
