Las Vegas police release details in Tuesday’s possible road rage shooting

The man who was shot and killed in what police have described as a possible road rage incident will never have the chance to propose to his longtime girlfriend on Valentine’s Day.

Cleottus Harvey, 26, of Las Vegas also won’t have the chance to see his two young children grow up, a grieving family member said Wednesday.

“We were close every since we were kids,” said Harvey’s cousin Anuewy Nurweezy, who lives in Detroit. “We both lost our fathers around the same age and ever since we were best friends.”

Harvey was working as a security guard at a local hospital but was trying to start his own business, Nurweezy said.

Harvey also was considering marriage.

“He was gonna get her a ring for Valentine’s Day this year,” Nurweezy said. “He was a kind-hearted individual who was really big on family values and taking care of his (own).”

Police said Harvey was stopped at a red light in a white Buick sedan on westbound Tropicana Avenue near Rainbow Boulevard on Tuesday when a dark compact car pulled up on his passenger side.

The two drivers argued, and the driver of the dark-colored car fired a handgun several times toward the Buick.

The driver of the dark-colored car then fled the scene, heading west on Tropicana. Witnesses told police the driver of the dark-colored car was speeding and driving recklessly before the confrontation.

Police arrived after a caller reported multiple gunshots. The Buick had struck two other vehicles, and police found the wounded Harvey unresponsive. He was taken to University Medical Center, where he died.

“A part of me is gone forever,” Nurweezy said.

Las Vegas police Lt. Mark Reddon said Harvey was shot in the chest. The Clark County coroner’s office has not yet released the official cause of death.

Harvey’s 3-year-old son and 2-year old daughter were in the back seat during the time of the shooting, Reddon said. They were unharmed.

Police said Tuesday the shooting was possibly the result of road rage. Wednesday they said it also could have been the result of an “earlier incident.”

Witnesses described the shooter only as a white man. The make and model of the dark-colored compact car he drove are unknown.
