Las Vegas sign moves closer to historic list

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign has moved one step closer to being placed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The state board of museums today nominated the sign for placement on the list managed by the National Park Service.

Clark County officials say the park service could act on the nomination by May. In its application, the county argues the neon sign is a cultural icon and a notable example of modern architecture.

The sign is located on the south end of the Las Vegas Strip. It reads, "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada" on the front and "Drive Carefully" and "Come Back Soon" on the back.
