Local bar under fire for ‘insensitive’ Super Bowl sign
A local bar has apologized after posting an insult on its marquee following the Super Bowl.
The marquee for the Blind Tiger Bar & Grill, located near Pecos and Sunset roads, said “Broncos couldnt beat the sick kids at St Judes” following the Seahawks’ 43-8 thrashing of the Broncos on Sunday.
Photos of the sign were posted to social media, urging people to call the bar and demand it be taken down.
“This is one of the most insensitive things I have ever seen … Call and give them a piece of your mind!!” Danielle Howard posted to Instagram.
Sin City Las Vegas posted the photo on its own page, where some commenters defended the sign, while others called it insulting.
“I think there is a better way to compare how (expletive) the Broncos did,” Patrick McIntyre wrote. “Insulting sick little kids is wrong.”
“When and if it happens to someone they love, then and only then will they understand,” Caesar Torres wrote.
Some said the point of the sign was to be insulting.
“I bet you’d laugh if a comedian or your drinking buddy said it,” Eric Hanawat said. “People need to stop being offended at everything.”
The bar posted an apology on Facebook on Tuesday afternoon.
“In no way was it meant to be disrespectful to St. Judes or the children they take care of,” it said in part. “The sign was taken down immediately. Once again our sincere apologies.”
By Tuesday evening, though, another statement had been posted to the Blind Tiger’s page:
“All right people. It was an ill advised sign. I’ve spent all day apologizing for it and I didn’t even put the damn sign up.
“No. I do not have a child who is suffering from cancer. I have lost multiple family members to this disease. It’s ugly. Give it a break. This wasn’t about the kids it was about how sucky the broncos were. Give it a rest.”
The bar’s post didn’t stop the flow of comments on Wednesday, where commenters continued to argue about the sign. One man said his daughter would have “given you the middle finger and laughed as I tore your sign into small pieces, even in her sickest of days.
“(The apology) falls far short for most of us who have lost an innocent child, or have children still fighting illness. Give some of your precious time to any children’s hospital and you will find amazing families, with children who are stronger than you could ever imagine!” wrote George Westberry. “They are not there by choice, but they fight, to the last breath for a ‘normal’ life. Go, see for yourself. Give something to the families and children you have thoughtlessly offended.”
