Man pleads guilty in 2003 slaying, police shooting

A man accused of killing a man and wounding two police officers in 2003 pleaded guilty today to second-degree murder and attempted murder.

Frank Lyles, 31, pleaded guilty but mentally ill in District Court to killing Keven Chandler, 48, on Bonanza Road near Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Minutes after the shooting, Lyles shot a Las Vegas police officer in the face. Another officer was wounded by shrapnel. Both officers survived.

Pleading guilty but mentally ill means Lyles will receive mental health treatment in prison.

Lyles was diagnosed as a schizophrenic and was not on his medication at the time of the shooting, said his attorney Bill Terry.
