Man pleads not guilty to binding boys

A 20-year-old Las Vegas man accused of tying up his girlfriend's children and leaving them alone while he watched an NBA basketball game at a bar pleaded not guilty Monday in District Court.

Jonathan Weaver was charged in June with two counts each of first-degree kidnapping, attempted murder and child abuse after Las Vegas police found his girlfriend's 1- and 2-year-old boys restrained in their car seats in an apartment complex garage.

A neighbor alerted police after hearing the children crying in the garage at the Augusta Apartments on Spencer Street south of Pyle Avenue. Officers found the boys hooded and bound. Weaver is not the boys' father.

According to police, Weaver was upset that he had to watch the boys. After tying them up, he went to a nearby bar and watched the NBA Finals match-up between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Orlando Magic.

The boys were in the garage about two hours and suffered minor injuries. Their mother was at night school at the time.

Weaver is being held at the Clark County Detention Center on $400,000 bond.

A hearing to set a trial date is scheduled for Oct. 20 before Judge James Bixler.
