Mesquite mom sentenced for cancer scam involving son

A Mesquite woman was sentenced to one year in prison Monday after pleading guilty to several fraud and obstruction charges.

Shawnanna Flores, 36, had raised hundreds of dollars for her 7-year-old son whom she said had liver cancer.

However, a trip to the hospital that yielded normal test results for her son prompted Mesquite police to look into her claims. They found her son’s medical documents were fake and issued a warrant for her arrest in September.

Flores also must pay $745 in restitution and complete 500 hours of community service, police said.
