NEON THURSDAY

Guitar Shorty at Railhead

Legend has it that when Jimi Hendrix was in the military in the early '60s, he used to go AWOL from his Army base to catch blues hellion Guitar Shorty play. That probably isn't much of a stretch. After all, Shorty was married to Hendrix's stepsister, Marsha.

And it's not hard to hear why Jimi would be drawn to Shorty: The latter's playing always has been as combustible as lighter fluid.

On his latest album, "We the People," Shorty keeps the fire in his belly blazing with hard-edged blues rock barn-burners tinged with social protest. "I've found the fountain of youth, baby," the 67-year-old howls on the disc. "I've got the blues in my blood." That blood is boilin'.

See him at 8 p.m. at The Railhead at Boulder Station, 4111 Boulder Highway. The show is free; call 432-7777.
