Nevada fishing report, August 6, 2015

LAKE MEAD — Swimbaits and top-water lures, such as a white jumping minnow or white and chartreuse swimbaits, have been the ticket this past week for bringing in stripers in the 2- to 4-pound range. The best time of day continues to be the early morning before sunup.

LAKE MOHAVE — Several larger stripers, one weighing in at 15 pounds, were caught this past week just south of Willow Beach using AC Plugs. At the southern end of the lake, largemouth bass are back in the coves, while smallmouth bass are up and down the shelves. Striped bass are around, so watch for the boils at the mouths of the coves. The best action is above Princess Cove.

LAUGHLIN — Catfish action has been good this past week, with several large fish being taken. One weighed in at more than 16 pounds, and a few others topped 7. The cats are taking cut anchovies. Stripers and largemouth bass also are doing well down river below Big Bend State Park.

LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS — Bluegill action has been good at most of the ponds. Though the fish are mostly small, they are a lot of fun for younger anglers and will take almost anything thrown at them. Mealworms work well. Please remember to dispose of discarded fishing line properly for the health of the wildlife.

KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — Occasional high winds continue to make fishing difficult across the area. Abundant aquatic vegetation also continues to limit access on area reservoirs, especially Adams-McGill. Fishing success should be picking up in all the reservoirs, with favorable weather in the forecast this week. The lower nighttime temperatures should start knocking back the weeds.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Trout action continues to be slow this week, but those who are catching are doing so using orange PowerBait or night crawlers with a bit of marshmallow on the hook. Bass anglers have been doing well using crankbaits and jigging rubber worms. Though lake conditions have been weedy, water temperatures have been cooling down, and that should improve the bite.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — The weeds along the shoreline continue to be a problem for most anglers, and the trout bite has been slow this past week. Orange PowerBait and night crawlers have been effective for those fish that are biting.

UPCOMING EVENTS — The Nevada Department of Wildlife will hold two free fishing classes this month. On Aug. 15, a free beginners fishing clinic for all ages will be held at Sunset Park starting at 9 a.m. An Introduction to Fly-Fishing Class is scheduled for Aug. 21. This is a two-part class, with the first occurring Aug. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. and the second on Aug. 22 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Go to http://www.ndow.org/Education for more information.
