Nevada lawmen search for three escapees

Three inmates escaped from the Esmeralda County jail in Goldfield, about 185 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Saturday night.

Two men and one woman escaped after overpowering a jail employee at 9:30 p.m., authorities said.

The employee was not injured.

The trio stole a pickup which was later recovered about 30 miles west of Goldfield near Silver Peak.

Sheriff's deputies were searching for the escapees Sunday with assistance from the Nevada Highway Patrol, Nye County sheriff's deputies and the Nevada National Guard.

Sheriff Ken Elgan said the fugitives are not believed to be armed.

They were in custody on numerous felony charges including evading a law enforcement officer.

They escaped wearing orange and white striped jump suits with the letters E-C-S-O on the back.

Citizens in the area were being advised to lock doors to their homes and vehicles and avoid picking up hitchhikers.
